  • Civilian Life:
Charles grew up in the Ball Club-Deer River, Minnesota area.

He returned home from serving his country and eventually became Leech Lake Gaming's General Manager of the White Oak Casino in Deer River.

Chuck loved being with his family. He was a special uncle who took the time to teach his nieces and nephews right from wrong. His grandchildren were also very important to him, and he developed a special bond with his grandson, Bryson. Charles followed his teachings and based his life upon the Anishinabe values and beliefs. He enjoyed attending all the pow-wows in our area, especially the United Tribes pow-wow. Some of the other enjoyments in his life were hunting, fishing, gathering, ricing, setting net, being a dedicated Twins and Vikings fan and shooting pool.

Chuck took pride in helping his brother raise his niece, JoAnna Smith Gotchie and nephew Leo Gotchie, III.

Chuck was preceded in death by his father, Leo Gotchie, Sr.; sister, Michelle "Pippi" Gotchie, his daughter's mother, Sonya Smith; grandparents, Andrew and Mary Gotchie and Ben and Nancy Martin; numerous aunts, uncles, other relatives, and valued friend, James Humphry.

Those he leaves behind to cherish his memory are his mother, Phyllis Gotchie; daughter, Theresa Smith Gotchie (Trent Larson); son, Clayton Bellanger; brothers, Leo Gotchie, Jr., Benjamin (Elaine) Gotchie, Milton Gotchie, Larry Gotchie, Sr., George Gotchie, and Andrew Gotchie; sisters, Francine (Tim) Smith, Myrna Gotchie, Bernadette Gotchie, and Nancy Gotchie (Jace Cash); four grandchildren; and other relatives and many friends.

Charles Andrew Gotchie, "BIMIIZHAA-ZHINGOS", (Follows the Weasel) of the Bear Clan and honoring his mother of the Bullhead Clan, began his spiritual journey on January 30, 2016 at St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth, Minnesota. Interment was in the St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery at Ball Club. No photo of the grave marker is available.
