Charles was raised in Bena, Minnesota.
Following his discharge, he became a locomotive engineer with Duluth Missabe and Iron Range Railway, retiring in 1960. He was then employed with the Department of Natural Resources from 1977 to 1990.
Charles is survived by his wife Viola; two sons, Scherwin Costello and Charles Zimiout; one daughter, Julie Costello; two stepsons: Ernest Belcourt and John Belcourt; three step-daughters, Patricia Campbell, Carol Woody, and Lavonne Arrell; seven grandchildren; twenty-three step-grandchildren; and twenty-four great-grandchildren.
Charles died at Cass Lake Public Health Hospital in Cass Lake, Minnesota and is buried in Lakeview Cemetery at Bena, Minnesota.
