At the age of 17, after completing high school, Clay enlisted in the United States Navy.

Clay was the eighth of nine children.
Upon his discharge, Clay returned to the Rochester, Minnesota area where he became quite an entrepreneur with several businesses. In the 1960s, he established the now famous Mr. Pizza restaurant in Rochester, which became a family owned and operated business. After retiring, Clay moved to Arizona. He returned to Minnesota and settled in the Bigfork area, where he enjoyed fishing and boating, being outdoors, and spending time with family and making new friends.
Clay was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers and four sisters.
He is survived by three sons, Richard (Erin), Roger (Sheli), and Mark (Jane); eight grandchildren; two brothers, Jim and George. Also surviving are companion Shirley Lawler Conrad, Bob (Lin) Lawler; four step grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and many dear friends.
Clay died in Bigfork Valley Hospital in Bigfork, Minnesota after a lingering illness. He was cremated.
