On May 17, 1991, Clayton married Charlotte Moreland in Fort Gibson, Oklahoma.

In April, 2006, they moved to Cohasset, Minnesota.

Clayton enjoyed reading and being around people.

He is survived by his wife, Charlotte; daughter, Halley; son, Austin; sisters, Jackie (Felix Hernandez) Fitzgerald, Cindy (Tony) Strange, Mary (Ray Kiser) Fitzgerald; and many nieces and nephews.

Clayton died in Grand Itasca Hospital in Grand Rapids, Minnesota and was cremated.
