Following his discharge from service, David served several years as an engineer on the iron ore ships on the Great Lakes. On June 1, 1950, he married Cindy M. Thoennes in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. He worked 35 years for Blandin Paper Company, in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, retiring in 1982.
He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, the Loyal Order of Moose and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, all in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. He was instrumental in developing the Association for Retarded Citizens and served in several offices. He also help develop the Day Activity Center for the Developmentally Disabled in Coleraine, Minnesota. He was active in the Head Injury Support Group for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Cindy; five daughters, Jean (Dan) Luken, Jane Connolly, Susan (Bob) Fogle, Lynn (Arthur) Juarez, Diane (Kenneth) Lardy; three sons, Alan, Mark (Carol), and Kevin (Earline); two sisters, Edith (Ralph) Sutherland and Pat Wischnewski; two brothers, James and Claude; 17 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents; a sister, Dorthea Stram; a brother, Hugh Connolly; and his stepfather, Ed Sladek.
Buried in Harris Cemetery at Grand Rapids, Minnesota. (Plot 2.37.1.6)
