  • Military Highlights:
In the Navy, I took a 9-month Mediterranean cruise. Then we were supposed to go on an "around the world" cruise. Instead, the Canberra went to Vietnam to support the troops on the ground for nine months. While in Vietnam, we were at sea, shelling 24 hours a day. The Canberra had 5" 38 caliber and 8" 55 caliber guns. The 8" guns have a 270-pound projectile using 100 pounds of powder for short range and 200 pounds of powder for long range. At night, we used 5" 38 caliber star shells to light up the Vietnam landscape.

After being stateside for three months, the monsoons started and we returned to Vietnam for another nine-month cruise.

While stationed in San Diego for three months, I was extended for four months. The Canberra was called back to Vietnam for nine months. After four months, I was flown back to the United States for discharge in 1966.
