    Don enlisted in the United States Army. He was in the Engineers and he spent 2 1/2 years in Germany tearing down bombed out buildings and excavating for new construction.


    Don also retired, as a Major, from the Minnesota National Guard in 1994 with 30 years of service. While in the Guard he was a commander of the Grand Rapids Unit and taught at the Minnesota Military Academy before retiring.

    Don's family moved to Mankato, Minnesota where he attended school through the eighth grade.

    He then moved to Cass Lake, Minnesota where he graduated from high school.

    Don married Beverly Underhill on September 7, 1957.

    The fall of 1959, Don moved to Grand Rapids, Minnesota to teach history. He taught for two years and then he pursued a masters degree in counseling and guidance.

    Don came back to Grand Rapids, Minnesota and became a middle school guidance counselor and then he went on to became a high school guidance counselor. He went back to school to receive an administration degree and became the assistant principal of the Grand Rapids High School in 1980. He retired from that position in 1993.

    Don was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Bud, Jack, Fritz, and his twin brother Dean; two sisters, Jean Johnson and Joanne Yocum; and one nephew Thom Joslin.

    He is survived by his wife, Beverly; a son Michael (Terri); a daughter, Michelle (Scott) Vanina; four grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and sisters, Marie (Larry) King and Patricia (Pete) Webster.

    Don died at Pottstown Memorial Hospital in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. A memorial service was held in Trappe, Pennsylvania and a celebration of life service was held at the United Methodist Church in Grand Rapids, Minnesota on June 30, 2012.
