Donald served in the United States Army Medical Corps during World War II in France, Belgium, and England.

Donald was a lifelong resident of Splithand Township, Itasca County. Following his discharge from the Army, he returned to the Jacobson, Minnesota area and farmed and logged most of his life.
He was married to Lillian J. (Ames) Rasmussen on December 16, 1982, in Grand Rapids, Minnesota.
He was a member of Carmel Lutheran Church in Ball Bluff Township, Aitkin County, the Splithand Township Board, the Itasca County Farm Service Board and the Aitkin County Council on Aging. He was also a member of the Jacobson Senior Citizens in Jacobson, Minnesota.
Donald's siblings were Roy Elwood, George Vernon, John Robert, and Ethel Lena (Burt) Skau.
He is survived by his family, Jack, Mary, Jason, and Alaina Burt; two sisters, Alice Smith and Ethel Skau; and two brothers, Roy and John.
