Donald Kirkes served in law enforcement for many years, retiring as chief of police for the City of Coleraine in 1991. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, Shrine and the North Star Shrine Club, the Lions Club, the Eagles Club, Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #1061 of Bovey, the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, National Rifle Association, and National Police and Peace Officers Association. He was a member of St. Vasilije Eastern Orthodox Church in Chisholm and a member and past president of the Serb National Federation Lodge #242 of Bovey.
Don died in Fridley, Minnesota and is buried in Lakeview Cemetery, Coleraine, Minnesota (Serbian Section - Block 54). He is survived by his wife, Sophie, daughter, Melanie (Wayne) Richards; a sister, Ellen Solomon; a brother, Richard Kirkes; and three grandchildren.
