After Donald's navy service, he moved to Grand Rapids, Minnesota where he was united in marriage to Shirley Cartwright in 1950.
Donald worked as a lineman with Dairyland Electric for several years and then worked for the City of Grand Rapids as a heavy machinery operator, retiring in 1983.
Donald was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Grand Rapids, and served as post commander and also served as the All State VFW post commander. He was a member of the Military Order of Cooties, Pup Tent 44 of Grand Rapids, serving as seam squirrel and was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. He served for 20 years as a campground host at the East Seelye Campground on Big Cutfoot Sioux Lake.
Preceding him in death were his parents; an infant son, Richard in 1953; and a sister, Mary Dimich.
Donald is survived by his wife, Shirley, a daughter, Susan (Treon) Yost; three sons, Donald, Dennis (Roxie), and Ronald (Sheri); a sister, Margaret Timgan; a brother, Irvin "Jim" Doyle; and seven grandchildren.
Donald died at his home and is buried in Hazelwood Cemetery at Blackberry Township, Itasca County.
