Itasca Iron News May 18, 1944: Don Eckland Rates a First Class Coxswain:
Mr & Mrs E.T. Eckland of Coleraine are proud of a letter received late last week from the commander in charge of the US Naval construction battalion of which their son Donald is a member. The letter says that young Eckland, who graduated from Greenway high school a year ago, has been promoted to Coxswain first class. The letter reads in part:
“*** I want to tell you that this advancement was based upon the recommendations of his company officers, Your son is an asset to US Naval Construction Battalion No. 67; a credit to himself and to his shipmates.
**** By his own efforts, his own integrity, and his won competence, he has won the advancement. the letter was signed by the Commander.
