Donald married Lilian A. Stanzuk on June 30, 1941, at First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea, Minnesota. He was a member of First Lutheran Church until he retired and moved to a cabin on Bowstring Lake in Itasca County, Minnesota.
Donald and his wife owned the Lakeview Grocery Store in Albert Lea, Minnesota for 15 years. He retired from the Albert Lea Fire Department in 1975, after serving as a fire fighter for 27 years.
Donald spent the last 18 winters in Mission, Texas.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, and the Eagles Club.
Preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, David and Billy.
He is survived by his wife, Lillian; five children, Donna Johnson and Peggy Haskins, Cindy Hamber, David Dudley, and Tony Dudley; fifteen grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Rose Barrus, Mary Elvebak; and Jean Lunde.
Donald died at Veteran's Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota and is buried in Hillcrest Cemetery at Albert Lea, Minnesota. No photo of grave marker is available at this time.
