    Sam grew up and attended school at St. Mark's in Shakopee, Minnesota.

    He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Cooties Pup Tent No. 44, the American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans, all of Grand Rapids, Minnesota.

    Sam is survived by his life companion of 25 years, Jessie M. Reigel; two daughters, Beatrice Schmitt and Rebecca Pyle; two sons, Robert Schmitt and Thomas Schmitt; two sisters, Leona Listrude and June Wagner; two brothers, Leo and John; and four grandchildren.

    Sam died at St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth, Minnesota and is buried in Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, Minnesota. (Section 13, Site 1982)
