Earl grew up and attended schools in Deer River, Minnesota.
He married Helen M. O'Malley on May 27, 1944, at St. Paul, Minnesota, where they lived until moving to Grand Rapids, Minnesota in 1950.
He worked as a furrier in St. Paul, Minnesota and worked as a mechanic in Grand Rapids, Minnesota for John Deere Implement Company. He moved to Alaska in 1968, and upon his retirement from the Alaska Department of Highways in 1980, returned to Grand Rapids, Minnesota.
He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans.
Earl was preceded in death by brothers, Ruben and William; and sisters, Jessie and Lou. He is survived by his wife Helen; daughter Mary Jane Shannon; son William; sister Lena Steppa; and three grandchildren.
Buried in Harris Cemetery at Grand Rapids, Minnesota. (Plot 2.43.3.8)
