    Elmo served in the National Guard for three years five months and then joined the Navy. He served three years nine months with a tour of duty on the destroyer U.S.S. Osborne during the Korean Conflict.

    Elmo married Josephine Ann Burt of Splithand on February 15, 1952 in California. The couple moved to Grand Rapids, Minnesota in 1956. He started his construction career with Johnson and Black Construction Company and later built homes in the Grand Rapids, Minnesota area and Lake Havasu, Arizona with Wayne Mills of Mills Cash Sales before starting Elmo Crowe and Sons Construction Company.

    He was active in Civil Air Patrol, serving as deputy commander and flew many search and rescue missions, searching for lost hunters and downed aircraft. He was active in Tall Timber Days and served as chairman for two years, Grand Rapids Players and Grand Rapids Rotary of Grand Rapids, Minnesota. He attended Salem Lutheran Brethren Church in Grand Rapids, Minnesota.

    He is survived by his wife, Josephine; five children, Robert, Jody, Farrell, Lilah, and Jonathan; two brothers, Bazel and Leo; a sister, Anita Jones; eleven grandchildren; and a step-grandchild, Erin Chaffee. He was preceeded in death by a son, Gary.
