Ernest enlisted in the United States Army in the 1920's where he served at Fort Bliss, Texas.

Ernest was raised on a farm in Becker County, Minnesota. In the early 1900's he worked as a streetcar conductor in Billings, Montana.
After his years of service, he moved to St. Louis, Missouri and worked for the railroad.
Ernest married Eulah M. Welker, at April 24, 1928, in St. Louis, Missouri and then came to Grand Rapids in that year. Eulah died the following year, 1929.
Ernest worked for the mines in the area for a time and was remembered most as the groundskeeper for the American Legion Field. For the past few years he had been a resident of Leisure Hills Nursing Home, in Grand Rapids, Minnesota.
Surviving is one niece, Isabel Thomson.
Ernest died at Itasca Memorial Hospital and is buried in Itasca Calvary Cemetery at Grand Rapids, Minnesota. (Plot I-B-44-15)
