Following Ernest's discharge, he returned to Grand Rapids, Minnesota and worked several years for Burlington Northern Railroad based in Duluth, Minnesota. He later moved to San Diego, California and worked as an inspector for the San Diego Trolley. He then returned to Grand Rapids and the Burlington Northern Railroad. He moved to Florida in 1997 where he was the owner/operator of a well drilling business.
Ernest died as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident along with his wife, Barbara, who also died.
He is survived by daughters. Rhonda Happy and Rebecca Wigand; his mother, Edna; brother, Roger; his former wife, Debbie Salisbury; and two grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his father, Albert.
Buried in Harris Cemetery at Grand Rapids, Minnesota. (Plot 3.15.3.6)
