Gary Mitchell married Frances Peterson in Minnesota in 1960. He worked for United Power from 1960 to 1975 at Cambridge, Milaca and Grand Rapids. He had been an Itasca County Deputy Sheriff since 1975. He also drove part-time for Jerry Hammann trucking. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church, the Minnesota Police and Peace Officer's Association, and AFSCME Local 639.
Gary died at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota. He is survived by his wife, Frances; a son, Jerry; two daughters, Cheryl Shimek and Lynn Steinhart; his father, Casper Mitchell; two sisters, Molly Weiler and Marilyn Brown; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother, Luella Mitchell in 1969.
