George entered the United States Army in 1945 at the age of 18 and served in Korea as a First Cook.

George grew up in Bovey, Minnesota and attended the local school there until he was 13 as his father needed his help on the farm.
After discharge, George went to mechanic school.
He then married and had different jobs to support his family. He moved his family to Spokane, Washington in 1966 where he first worked at Spokane Flour Mill until it closed, then at Centennial Flour Mill until he retired in 1993.
He had divorced and eventually married his wife Gail, in 2003 and she survives him at home.
George is also survived by five children, Barney (Wendy), Brenda, Jesse (Kerry), Jennifer (Dave) Schmitt; and Jeffrey; seven stepchildren, Dan (Terri) Harper, Connie (Mark) Pierce, Gary (Joanie), Jerry (Anna), Duane (Susan) Sharon (Mark) Robinson, and Jeff (Shana); many grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and a sister, Catherine.
He is preceded in death by his parents; baby brother, John, Jr.; sister, Helen; and son, Steven.
George passed away of cancer at Hospice House in Spokane, Washington and is buried in Greenwood Memorial Terrace at Spokane, Washington.
