George Mayer returned to Bessemer, Michigan after his discharge from the Army and married Martha Witzman in 1903. He was employed by the Oliver Iron Mining company. He moved to Coleraine, Minnesota around 1907 where he was a shovel runner for the same company, a job he held for a total of 27 years. In 1926 he became an employee of the Coleraine school district, a position he held at the time of his death. He was a member of the A.F. & A.M., the Presbyterian church, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
George died in Hines, Illinois following an operation. He is buried in Lakeview Cemetery, Coleraine, Minnesota (Block 34). He is survived by his wife, Martha; four daughters, Lillian (H.M.) Peterson, Ruth (Roland) Williams, Florence (Frank) Andres, and Evelyn (Elton) Dickenson; two sons, George, Jr. and Clarence; and siblings, Frank Mayer, Joe Mayer, John Mayer, Margaret Hilligan, Mrs. Oscar Lidberg, Mary Bretall, Mrs. James Piper, and Kate Kessler. - Tribal Affiliation(s):
