    George entered service in World War I from Deer River, Minnesota in July, 1918. During the World War, George was a member of Battery D, 75th Coastal Artillery Corps. He trained at Jefferson Barracks in Missouri and departed overseas in September, 1918. On February 25, 1919, George left St. Nazaire, France on the USS Aeolus for the United States.

    Information from Itasca News, Deer River, Minnesota dated January 27, 1927:

    "George T. Fairbanks, 26 years of age, son of Mr. and Mrs. John G. Fairbanks, who live near Winnibigoshish Dam, died last Monday morning after an illness of some years from heart trouble.
    Deceased was born at Bena in 1900. During the World War he was a member of Battery D, 75th Artillery. About a year ago he became a patient at the Veteran's Hospital in St. Paul, returning here last September.
    He is survived by his wife, two children, his parents and a number of brothers and sisters. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the J. G. Fairbanks home, and were in charge of Rev. D. McEnery. Interment was made in the Fairbanks cemetery a short distance south of the home. A firing squad from the local Post of the American Legion assisted at the grave and Milton Wolfe blew taps."

    Donald is buried in Fairbanks Cemetery at Deer River, Minnesota.
