    Soon after graduation, Gerald served in the United States Navy for nine years as a diesel mechanic in both the Atlantic and Pacific and particularly Vietnam.

    Gerald attended schools in Bird Island, Minnesota and graduated from Montevideo High School.

    Following his naval service, Gerald settled in Portsmouth, Virginia where he worked for a trucking firm as a diesel mechanic.

    After a disabling incident in Portsmouth, Virginia, he moved to Bigfork, Minnesota in 1972.

    Gerald volunteered at the Bigfork School and often helped out at the North Itasca Health Care Center. He was an active member of the Old Scenic Church.

    Gerald is survived by his father, Walter; one sister, Jean Nelson; and one brother, Walter.

    Gerald died at Pine Tree Villa in Bigfork, Minnesota and is buried in the Bohemian National Cemetery in Silver Lake, Minnesota.
