    A graduate of the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Minnesota he was a member of the Farm House Fraternity. He was a national crop-judging champion in 1933. Gerhard taught agriculture and biology for 41 years at Grand Rapids High School, in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. He experimented extensively with developing new strains of wild rice. A government crop inspector, he remained an avid gardener as a member of the Grand Rapids Garden Club. A sports enthusiast and amateur photographer, he was a member of the YMCA and the Golden K Club in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. He was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, where he held several offices.

    Gerhard was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen, in 1980. Surviving are his wife; Vivian; daughter Marie Bieganowski; sons Daniel, Dale, and Bruce; a sister Anna Erickson; a brother Harold; a step-son Bob Grussendorf; step-daughters Mary Sandstrom, Carol Schuscke, Joan DeWitt, Laurie Martin, and Gail Johnson; ten grandchildren; and eleven step-grandchildren.
