After Gilbert's service time, he returned to Minnesota, living in Minneapolis, Hill City, Grand Rapids, Babbitt and lastly Taconite for the past three years.
He had worked as a construction laborer, cook, and bartender. He was a member of the Babbitt American Legion Club.
Surviving family includes his three daughters; Michele, Tracy Welsh, and Roxanne; one son, Gregory; his mother, Flora; four sisters; five brothers, four grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Gilbert died at his home in Taconite, Minnesota and is buried in Macville Cemetery at Swatara, Minnesota.
