Gilbert was raised and graduated from high school and junior college in Chicago, Illinois. He lived for many years in Arlington Heights, Illinois, which is in the Chicago area, and worked as an office clerk for the Chicago Tribune.
He married Alberta Cutting in 1936. He and his wife raised twelve foster children.
After his retirement in 1971, Gilbert moved to Spring Lake, Minnesota and had lived in Grand Rapids, Minnesota since 1974.
He was an active member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Grand Rapids, Minnesota and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Spring Lake, Minnesota.
Preceded in death by a daughter, June Larsen, surviving relatives include his wife, Alberta; daughters Phyllis Grogg and Roselyn Schulze; son, Allard; sisters, Eleanor Deu and Marilyn Hummell; twelve grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Gilbert died in Itasca Medical Center in Grand Rapids, Minnesota and is buried in Itasca Calvary Cemetery at Grand Rapids, Minnesota. (Plot I-E-13-1-8)
