Gilbert served in the United States Army during World War II and was activated with the Minnesota National Guard during the Korean Conflict.

Gilbert moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota with his family while an infant where he attended schools.
Gilbert had been employed in construction work and with the King Lumber Company before being employed by the Blandin Paper Company where he worked the past twenty years.
Gilbert married Evelyn Chidester at Grand Rapids, Minnesota in 1947.
He was an active member of the Masons and was past master of Masonic Lodge 208 A.F. and A.M. in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. He was a member of the Jephthah Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, the North Star Shrine Club, Zion Lutheran Church, the Ponti-Peterson VFW Post, the local saddle club and the Independent Union of Paper Mill Workers in Grand Rapids, Minnesota.
Merritt is survived by his wife, Evelyn; one daughter, Barbara Merritt; four sons, Gary, Michael, Mark, and Ross; four sisters, Mrs. Carl (Adeline) Keller, Quinn Engen, Mrs. Edwin (Frances) Johnson, and Mrs. Vern (Bernice) LaFave; three brothers, Lyle, Kenneth, and Glenn; and one granddaughter.
