After graduation, Harold enlisted in the United States Navy and served during World War II.

Following discharge from the service, Harold married Elaine Aakhus.
He spent time as a farmer, storekeeper, carpenter and cement finisher and was a member of the Local 785 Cement Masons Plaster Union, Effie American Legion and Effie Fredheim Lutheran Church, Effie, Minnesota.
Harold was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine; a brother, Alvin; and his parents, Carl and Josie.
Harold is survived by a son, David; three daughters, Judy Nelson, Marsha Root, and Debbie Porter; best friend and companion, Anne Bryte; a sister, Rosella Baldwin; ten grandchildren and four great-grand children.
Harold died at his home in Effie, Minnesota and is buried in Fredheim Norwegian Church Cemetery at Effie, Minnesota.
