Herbert Latvala married Sylvia Viola Leino. He retired as president of the Nashwauk First National Bank in 1973. He was a 20-year member of the Nashwauk School Board; served as past president of the Minnesota School Board Association; was a member of the Itasca Finnish Club; was a past president of the Minnesota Finnish-American Historical Society; and was a member and past adjutant of the Nashwauk American Legion Post 307. He was a past member of Nashwauk Masonic Lodge 331; Hibbing Lodge of Perfection; Scottish Rite Bodies and Aad Temple of the Shrine, Duluth; and a past patron of Order of Eastern Star, Nashwauk Chapter 227, and Order of White Shrine of Jerusalem Trinity No. 9.
Herb died in Eveleth, Minnesota and is buried in Nashwauk Cemetery, Nashwauk, Minnesota. He is survived by a son, Herbert L. Latvala; a daughter, Linda Kay Porten; brothers, Richard, Robert and Harvey; a sister, Helen Mitchell; and five grandchildren.
