Howard married Winona Fear in Grand Rapids, Minnesota in 1955. He worked 31 years for Pickands Mather at the Danube Mine in Bovey, Minnesota, and then at Erie Mining in Hoyt Lakes, Minnesota. He retired in 1985 and moved to Blackberry Township from Hoyt Lakes. He was a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Grand Rapids. He enjoyed hunting and traveling.
Howard died at his home in Blackberry Township, Itasca County, Minnesota, and is buried in Hazelwood Cemetery, Blackberry Township, Minnesota. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Winona "Nona"; two daughters, Wendy (Bruce) Petersen and Rene' (Bruce) James; two sons, Howard Mattfield, Jr, and Brian (Tammy) Mattfield; two sisters, Mae Anderson and Eunice (LeMoyne) James; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Kim, who died in 1973; a brother, Bernard Mattfield; and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Bessie and Bill Fear.
