Ira served three years in the United States Merchant Marines during World War II.

Ira married Ordale "Ordy" Holland on April 12, 1945 at Des Moines, Iowa.
Following honorable discharge from the service in 1946, Ira and Ordy lived in Des Moines, Iowa and in the St. Louis area until 1957. In 1957, they moved to Spang Township in Itasca County, Minnesota.
Ira was an iron worker in the construction industry and worked on the St. Louis Arch project.
He was preceded in death by his father and two sisters.
Ira is survived by his wife, Ordale; a brother, Lee; his mother, Nadine Schneider; and a niece and nephew, Melissa and Lee Fisher.
Ira died at Itasca Memorial Hospital in Grand Rapids, Minnesota and is buried in Itasca Calvary Cemetery at Grand Rapids, Minnesota. (Plot I-E-28-3-1)
