James jointed the United States Navy in 1942.

James was a construction worker in North Dakota and on the Alaskan Highway before joining the United Navy in 1942.
In 1946, James married Harriet Winnegge in Devils Lake, North Dakota. They came to Grand Rapids, Minnesota in 1953. He worked for Casper Construction until retiring in 1973.
James was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1720, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 2469, and Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 2023, all in Grand Rapids, Minnesota.
Survivors are his wife, Harriet; daughter, Nancy Brandborg; sisters, Agnes Ebert, Julia McManus, Frances Greenwood, Marie Baratz, Sylvia Steinbecker and Angeline Kohel; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Buried in Harris Cemetery at Grand Rapids, Minnesota. (Plot 2.35.3.6)
