James was raised in Bovey, Minnesota where he attended the local schools.
He went to work in the iron ore mines until he entered the service. After completing the service, he moved to Hibbing, Minnesota in 1954. He had been employed as a purchasing agent for the Hibbing Public Utilities and retired from this position in 1986 having been employed over thirty years.
James was a member of the American Legion Post No. 222 and St. Leo's Catholic Church, which are located in Hibbing, Minnesota.
He was preceded in death by a son, Daniel, in 1955.
Surviving are his wife, Nada; two daughters, Jamie and Diane; one brother, Joseph; and a sister, Elizabeth Bogdanovich.
James died in the University of Minnesota Hospital and is buried in Maple Hill Cemetery at Hibbing, Minnesota. (Maplehill-6-46-e 1/2)
