James joined the military as a young man of 17. He served in the United States Air Force during World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. He retired in 1975.

James moved back to Northern Minnesota where he made his home on Lawrence Lake in Itasca County.
He loved the outdoors where he hunted, trapped, and fished. He was a former member of the Lawrence Lake American Legion.
James was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Mary and Geraldine, and a niece, Becca.
He is survived by his children, Winston "Woody" (Sharon), Jennifer (Kurt) Miller, and Karin (Steve) Anderson; a brother, George; sisters, Betty, Marilyn, Georgia, Yvonne, LeAna and Kathy; five grandchildren; along with several nieces and nephews.
James died at his home on Lawrence Lake and is buried in Bethany Lutheran Church Cemetery at Shotley, Minnesota.
