Jim joined the United States Navy in 1957 and served for three years.

Jim grew up and attended school in St. Paul, Minnesota.
After serving in the military, he married Clara Kobbermann in Benson, Minnesota.
He started in Minnesota as a salesman and moved his family throughout the United States to Virginia, New Jersey, Florida, and Arizona finally settling at his family cabin Grand Rapids, Minnesota in 2002.
Jim enjoyed golfing, car racing, boat racing, playing and watching hockey, airplanes, and anything that goes fast.
Preceding him in death were his parents; brothers; and one sister.
Jim is survived by his wife of 48 years, Clara; daughter, Lori Gannaway (Dwayne Somers); son, Clint (Natasha); sister, Leah Dunbar; grandson, Maxell; and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
Jim died at St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth, Minnesota and is buried in Fort Snelling National Cemetery at Minneapolis, Minnesota. (Sec CC1, Row 13, Site 44D)
