James served with the United States Army during World War II, serving in the China-Burma-India Theater.

James attended schools in Virginia before moving to Minnesota in 1934.
In 1942, James married Alice Lindeborg.
Following his discharge from the service, James returned to Spring Lake, Minnesota and resided there until 1948, when the couple moved to St. Paul, Minnesota.
He worked in St. Paul with Haldeman and Homme until 1960, when he and his wife moved to Manitowoc/Two Rivers, Wisconsin. There he worked at Hamilton Industries until retirement in 1980.
In 1983, James returned to the Grand Rapids, Minnesota area, where he was a member of the Community Presbyterian Church and the Perry-Heide Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Talmoon, Minnesota. He was a past member of the Manitowoc Elks and the Manitowoc First Presbyterian Church in Wisconsin.
Surviving relatives are his wife, Alice; three sisters, Miriam Lehinger, Mildred Wilburn, and Ruth Winters; one brother, Leonard; and several nieces, nephews, great-great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.
James died at the Itasca Medical Center in Grand Rapids, Minnesota and interment was in Greenwood Cemetery in Itasca County, Minnesota.
