The Savannah was a Wichita-class, fast attack oiler that was equipped with two CH-46 Knight helicopters and sea sparrow missile systems, coupled with the installation of two Phalanx Close-in Weapon Systems (CWIS). Home port was Norfolk, Virginia.

Transit of the Suez Canal in January, 1992 and patrolled the Gulf for four months. During that time, we were engaged by five gunboats from Iraq Navy. Two F-14s Tomcats from the USS America made them change their heading and they retreated to the coast with no shots fired.

I left active duty in July, 1992 and joined the Naval Reserve--Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 25 (NMCB 25), United States Navy Seabees. Forward deployed to Guam. I was stationed at Orote Point mineral deposit at the Camp Covington base in Guam. I trained on explosive ordnance, detonating island coal reserves for processing into Class 5.
