    John joined the Navy at the age of 17 and served four years. He then went to work for Union Pacific Railroad in Grand Island, Nebraska and later joined the Marines from 1951-1954

    After completing the Marines in 1954, John went back to work for Union Pacific as a conductor.

    In 1980, John married Joyce Sprague and they resided in North Platte, Nebraska until John retired at age 65.

    John and Joyce then moved to Deer River, Minnesota to be closer to family.

    He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Emma Coleman and Alice Dittman.

    John is survived by his wife, Joyce; his brothers, Carl and Edward (Karen); sisters, Betty Ann Jensen (Herb), Liz (Donald) Enck; and many nieces and nephews.

    John died at Deer River Nursing Home in Deer River, Minnesota and is buried in St. Joseph's Cemetery at Ball Club, Minnesota.
