John grew up in Balsam Township and attended Schumaker Elementary and Grand Rapids High School.
After the war, John worked as a carpenter in Grand Rapids, Minnesota.
In the early 60's, John moved to Seattle where he worked as a union carpenter. Johnny and his wife, Alice, lived in the University District. They were members of the Seattle Finnish Society. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and metal detecting.
Johnny was preceded in death by his wife, parents, three brothers, and one sister.
He is survived by two step-daughters, Connie Leinonen and Linda Darden; one sister, Edna Carlson; three nieces; one nephew; two stepchildren; and several grandchildren.
John is buried in Murray Hill Cemetery in Clatskanie, Oregon.
