While attending the university, John won the World Championship Log Rolling contest and was known as "Schoolboy Joe" at the national sports shows where he put on exhibitions.
He worked for the Northwest Paper Company and the Wood Conversion Company in Cloquet, Minnesota until enlisting in the United States Army in 1942.
He married Annamay Doran on July 27, 1943, in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. He and his wife lived in various military assignments including Yokohama, Japan and Atlanta, Georgia. He retired from the Army, earning the rank of major.
Since his retirement, the couple have made their home in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Grand Rapids, Minnesota.
Preceding him in death were his parents and a brother, Tom.
He is survived by his wife, Annamay; and a sister, Elizabeth Payne.
John died at Itasca Medical Center in Grand Rapids, Minnesota and is buried in Itasca Calvary Cemetery at Grand Rapids, Minnesota. (Plot C-C-06-0-2)
