Johnnie served in the United States Army in the Military Police and as a German interpreter to the General in the European Theater during World War II.

Johnnie was united in marriage to Bernice Treftz on September 25, 1949 in Greenway, South Dakota. They made their home in Ashley, North Dakota where he farmed and taught school.
In 1956, they moved to the Virginia area in Minnesota and he worked in the iron mines. He was then transferred to the Grand Rapids area for several years and retired after 30 plus years in the mines.
Johnnie was a member of the Full Gospel Church in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. He loved cross-country skiing, fishing, hunting, and walking.
Johnnie is preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, John; two brothers; and a daughter-in-law, Sandy Diede.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Bernice; and five children, Judy (Gordy) Huff, James Diede, Cheryl (Tom) Gustafson, Maxine Martinez, Gale (Bob) Gibbs; one sister, Ramona Ottenbacher; one brother, Marvin (June) Diede; ten grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.
Johnnie died at Grand Itasca Hospital in Grand Rapids, Minnesota and is buried in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery at Little Falls, Minnesota. (Section 12, Site 180)
