Joseph was raised and lived most of his life in Grand Raids, Minnesota. He was active for several years with the Civil Air Patrol in Grand Rapids, serving as squadron commander during the 1970's. He was a commercial and private pilot. He worked as an Itasca County Deputy Sheriff since 1971, most recently working as a dispatcher.
He was a member of the Itasca Lodge 208, Grand Rapids, Minnesota; Pokegama Chapter 102 Royal Arch Masons, Grand Rapids, Minnesota; North Star Shrine Club and Cycle Patrol, Eveleth Commandry 35 and AAD Temple Shrine of Duluth, Minnesota; the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Grand Rapids, Minnesota, Gold Wing Riders of America; and was actively involved in the Ruffed Grouse Society and the Grand Rapids chapter of Ducks Unlimited.
Surviving relatives include sisters, Josephine Crowe, Bonnie Fontaine, and Shirley Woodson; brothers, Allen, Arnold, Robert, Scotty, Charles, William, and Wayne "Bud".
