Louis Lequier enlisted in the army just prior to his twentieth birthday and was assigned to Company C, 10th Infantry and sent to Camp Custer, Michigan for training. He became sick with Spanish influenza and died while still at Camp Custer. His father requested that his remains be returned home. Military rites were conducted by the Deer River company of Home Guard and burial was in the Chippewa Indian cemetery near Ball Club, now known as Saint Josephs Cemetery.
