At the age of 17, Marvin joined the United States Navy and served aboard the USS Iowa during World War II. He was also part of the nuclear bomb tests at Bikini Atoll in 1946.

Marvin was united in marriage to Dianne Altmyer on October 6, 1960, in Kankakee, Illinois.
He worked as a mechanic throughout his life. Marvin enjoyed fishing, hunting, and taking care of his menagerie of animals at their farm.
Marvin is preceded in death by his parents, five siblings, and a grandson, David Breeden.
He is survived by his wife, Dianne; seven children, Penny (Chet) Ballinger, Marvin, Jr. (Cyndi) Ford, Lisa (Brian) Ryhti, Melissa (Calvin) Durant, Erick (Gail) Ford, Matthew (Heather) Ford, and Billie (John) Busha; a sister, Darlene (LeRoy) Curtis; twelve grandchildren (with one more on the way); three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Marvin died in his home in Nashwauk, Minnesota and is buried in the Nashwauk Cemetery at Nashwauk, Minnesota.
