Matt Heiniemi married Frances Martin in Minnesota in 1942 prior to entering the U.S. Army Air Force and serving in World War II. He worked at U.S. Steel, starting in 1950, as a miner. He also worked at the Sago Township Landfill for 10 years. He was a charter member of SOAR, the Warba American Legion Post 432, and the Grand Rapids VFW Post 1720.
Matt died in Grand Rapids Minnesota and is buried in Trout Lake Community Cemetery, Bovey, Minnesota. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Frances; daughters, Linda Binkowski and Donna Heiniemi; sister, Evelyn Bernard; brother, Hugo Heiniemi; two grandchildren; three great-granddaughters; and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, John, Waino, Elmer, and Leo Heiniemi; and sister, Hilda Korkia.
