    Mel Miersch was a lifelong resident of the Nashwauk, Minnesota area. He married Martha Dosch Waldvogel in Minnesota in 1964. Mel was employed as a plant foreman for National Steel Mining Company and retired after 32 years of service. He was a member of the Nashwauk Lutheran Church, the Nashwauk American Legion Post, the Itasca County Sheriff's Posse, the Nashwauk Snowmobile Club, the Greenway Snowmobile Club, the Range Riders ATV Club, and the Hanna Retirees Club. He owned and operated Mel's Sport Shop in Nashwauk. He was an attendant for the Nashwauk Ambulance Service at which time he was a CPR and EMT instructor. He enjoyed snowmobiling, four-wheeling and small engine repair as his hobbies.

    Mel died at the Grand Itasca Clinic and Hospital, Grand Rapids, Minnesota and is buried in the Nashwauk Cemetery, Nashwauk, Minnesota. He is survived by his four children, Larry (LeAnn) Waldvogel, Ken (Denise) Waldvogel, Jerry (Charlene) Miersch, and Peggy (Harry) Smith; nine grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents: his wife, Martha in 2004; four sisters, Verna, Martha, Alice, and Agnes; and two brothers, William and Theodore.
