Melvin was a United States Navy veteran serving from 1941 to 1945. He served on the Lyman K. Swenson (DD-729). His muster date was April 1, 1946.

Melvin grew up and attended schools in the Trout Lake area.
He married Harriet Bloom in 1966 in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. He worked various jobs as a laborer and machinist and was a member of the McVeigh-Dunn No. 60 American Legion of Grand Rapids, Minnesota.
He is survived by his wife, Harriet; three daughters, Kathy Olson, Phyllis Leach, and Gail Winger; two sons, Steve and Randy; three sisters, Minerva Mahn, Muriel Larson, and Maxine Daniels; a brother, Marvin; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Jerry Bloom, in 1967.
Buried in Itasca Calvary Cemetery at Grand Rapids, Minnesota. (Plot C-D-26-19)
