Prior to entering the Navy, Merle served with the Civilian Conservation Corps. He served with the United States Navy during World War II.

Merle married Norma Limburg on July 2, 1958 in Cannon Falls, Minnesota.
In 1965, they moved to Max, Minnesota where Merle worked as a logger. They then moved to Dayton, Ohio in 1977 and he was employed by the street department of Riverside and in the computer lab at Wright Field. In 1985, they returned to Max and he was employed as a custodian at the Squaw Lake School.
Merle was a member of the Oriental Lodge No. 34 A.F. & A.M. of Cannon Falls, Minnesota.
Merle is survived by his wife, Norma; seven brothers, Laverne, Stanley, Maurice, Obert, Gordon, Allan, and Ralph; and three sisters, Gladys Berg, Roberta Grouden, and Mystie Olson.
Preceding him in death were his parents, two brothers, Dellard and Alfred; four sisters, Bernice Buffinton, Dorothy Thornhill, Judy Olson, and Marian Forss.
Merle died at St. Mary's Hospital in Duluth, Minnesota. Merle is buried
in Cannon Falls Community Cemetery at Cannon Falls, Minnesota.
