    Merlin served in the United States Army Infantry from 1943-1946. He was trained as a gunner and served in the Battle of the Bulge and the Invasion of Normandy.

    Merlin was raised in Duluth, Minnesota.

    He taught school in Remer for two years before going into the service.

    After the service, he met Carol Rutter and they were married in September of 1946. They moved to Fosston, Minnesota where he taught a year before moving to Deer River, Minnesota where he taught for 30 years as an Industrial Arts teacher. After retiring in 1978, he substitute taught for thirteen years.

    Merlin loved photography, wood working, reading and camping. He especially loved spending time with the family.

    Merlin is preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, and two brothers.

    He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Carol; Jeff (Kathy), Connie (Tom) Powell, and Tracey Jensen (Dennis Littrell); nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Gerald.

    Merlin died at Evergreen Terrace in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. He was cremated.
