Newspaper article: Itasca Iron News, Coleraine, Minnesota - 4 Feb 1943 – "Mike Chupurdia Was Killed in Action – Mrs. Joseph Madich, living at Snowball Lake, near Calumet, has been notified by the War Department that her son, Mike Chupurdia was killed in action in the South Pacific battle area. He was last heard from thru a letter written by him January 6th. Two brothers are in service.
Mike Chupurdia was with the U.S. Marines. He was employed for several years by the Inter-State at Calumet and considered Calumet his home. He is well-known in Coleraine and Bovey and the other range towns. A sister, Mrs. Melvin Harrison, lives at Stevenson location and another sister, Rose, lives in Hibbing. Chupurdia was inducted from Itasca County and left from Grand Rapids, since he was employed in this county."
