Orven served in the United States Army in both the North African and Italy Campaigns. He received an honorable discharge as a Corporal.

As a young man, Orven worked in the CCC and as a lumberjack.
Orven retired in 1975 from Hill Annex Mines in Calumet, Minnesota as a Blast Drill Operator. He retired to Effie, Minnesota.
Orven is survived by his wife, Kathy; six step-children, Renee Willett, Teri Clark, Tammy Metke, Scott Clark, Randy Clark, and Stacy Fideldy; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Orven died in the Bigfork Nursing Home in Bigfork, Minnesota and is buried in Fredhiem Norwegian Church Cemetery (Effie Evergreen Cemetery) in Effie, Minnesota.
